Per Mar Medical Alert Q&A

September 12, 2018

We’ve all seen the “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up” commercials on television and we all have someone in our lives that we’ve thought could use this technology but how do you know when to give it a try? In today’s blog, we’ll cover frequently asked questions so that you are fully informed when it comes time to get yourself or your loved one a Per Mar medical alert device.

Q: How does the medical alert system work exactly?

A: Per Mar Medical Alert works very similarly to your home security system and smoke detectors in that calls are monitored 24/7, dispatching emergency services and/or notifying your emergency contacts for you when needed. Your security sales consultant will collect basic medical information from you, enabling emergency operators to be informed on your medical needs so you don’t have to convey everything in your time of distress.

Customers choose from a pendant or watch and each device comes with a communicator connected to a traditional phone line or cellular communicator. There is a button allowing you to activate it when needed.

Q: What if I fall and I am unable to press the button?

A: You have the option to add the automatic fall detection feature which allows the pendant device to contact the monitoring center when you have fallen (see note below). If you are able to speak, there is also a two-way voice system with a loud, clear speakerphone for conversing with the emergency operator.

NOTE: The fall detection feature is based on the rate of speed and the angle of the fall and is only offered with the pendant necklace. Some, more gracious falls are less likely to be detected whereas an abrupt fall straight to the floor should be detected but is not guaranteed. Please take this into consideration when purchasing and using the device.

Q: What if I fall in the shower?

A: The Medical Alert system is a two-piece system. The button on the pendant device and watch are both waterproof so you never have to take it off. The primary device, however, is not waterproof.

Q: What if the battery dies?

A: We monitor the batteries, too! The system gives a low battery warning long before the battery dies and we replace them for free.

Q: What if I’m still active outside of the home?

A: There are two Medical Alert options, the in-home device that operates via cellular or landline and the mobile device that operates via cellular technology. Many of the same features are available with the mobile device, including two-way voice, GPS, rechargeable batteries, and 24/7 medical monitoring. The GPS option is not water-resistant and must be charged.

Q: Can it help with dispensing medicine?

A: TabSafe is a brand new technology that provides an automated medicine dispensing unit but is not a Medical Alert product. Currently, TabSafe is only available in select areas, so please call to see if it is available in your area. Please contact us to see if/when it will be available in your area. Please note that TabSafe requires a landline phone.
