Case Study: Campus Security Video Integration in Action

April 3, 2023

Formed in 1897 in Davenport, IA, Palmer College was the first chiropractic college in the world. They have grown to a campus of about 1,000 students and 200 faculty and staff with two additional campuses in other states. Per Mar Security has proudly provided security for their Davenport campus since the 1970s. We’ve been with them as their needs and campus have expanded.

There are more than 200 video surveillance cameras on campus, which Palmer uses to augment their physical security efforts. “One of the neat things about the security program at Palmer is that we have an integration between security officers and security cameras,” said Brad Duffy, Physical Security Division President.

This video integration helped Matthew McClain, Security Site Supervisor, quickly track, locate, and catch a suspect to recover stolen property from the campus bookstore. After contacting the Senior Director of Safety and Security, Brian Sharkey, as well as their outside patrol Per Mar officer, McClain was able to execute his protocol quickly and catch the suspect. “From the time he exited the building and hid the [stolen] books in a bush to the time the Per Mar officer arrived on the scene was probably 45 seconds,” McClain excitedly reported.

McClain wasn’t the only one pleased with the outcome. Sharkey stated, “Obviously, that kind of responsiveness 24/7 certainly makes it easier for us to make sure we get [security] officers in the right places.”

We are thrilled Palmer College has embraced Per Mar’s electronic security systems and physical security officers to ensure the best and most efficient outcomes for a fully safe and secure campus. Their safety is just as important to us as it is to them and we look forward to continuing our partnership for many years to come!
